First of all make a vCard file of your mobile contacts by exporting contacts to SD card.

This application will backup all your contacts on SD card which you want to optimize. Now Copy that backup to your computer.
Now login to your Gmail account through desktop site and then click on the Label Gmail on the top left corner as pointed by the arrow in the image and click contacts.
Now, Click on more and then click import
Now , you will see a window to import your contacts
Choose your vCard file which you backed up earlier and then click on import.
In my case the file name is contacts.vcf
After clicking export a file will be downloaded on your computer. Delete all the contacts which you have in your mobile and Copy the downloaded file to your mobile and import the file in your Contact Manager. You are all done. Now you have successfully optimized your contacts.

there is a link under the button "More" for "Find and merge contacts" . Just click that link
and all your duplicates will be merged to one and the contacts will be optimized.
Now, To move these optimized contacts to your phone , you need to click on More and click Export
Choose the options as per your need. For mobiles choose vCard format and click Export
After clicking export a file will be downloaded on your computer. Delete all the contacts which you have in your mobile and Copy the downloaded file to your mobile and import the file in your Contact Manager. You are all done. Now you have successfully optimized your contacts.
